In short: A GEO consultant works to get your company named in the answers of AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, not just listed among blue links. The service has four building blocks: an audit with documented test questions, citable answer content, technical machine readability and ongoing monitoring. The label “GEO consultant” is not protected in Austria; what you can check instead is the trade authorisation in the public register, the measurement method and the figures the provider discloses. The sharpest selection criterion is therefore a single question: does the provider show you their own measurement including the denominator, or do they promise mentions?
What does a GEO consultant do?
A GEO consultant works on getting an AI to name your company as the answer, not merely to know it exists. The work splits into four building blocks, and a clean proposal lists them separately, each with its own price and its own deliverable:
- Audit. Where does your firm stand today in ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, measured against documented test questions written from a customer's point of view, including an answer to the uncomfortable question of who gets named instead.
- Answer content. Pages and articles that answer a real customer question conclusively in the first few sentences. Models quote statements that hold up without their surroundings.
- Machine readability. Structured data, a clear heading logic, content in the HTML rather than loaded later by JavaScript, and AI crawlers that are not locked out.
- Monitoring. The same questions measured repeatedly over months, so that change can be told apart from daily noise.
And what a GEO consultant cannot do: guarantee a mention. Nobody has access to the selection a model makes at the moment it answers. What the four blocks mean in substance is set out in the article GEO: how your company becomes the answer given by ChatGPT and Google AI.
What types of provider are there in Austria?
Four, and they differ less in vocabulary than in emphasis. You can spot the type by which of the four building blocks is described in most detail in the proposal:
- SEO agencies with a GEO module. Strong on technology and measurability. Check whether GEO there has test questions of its own or is a renamed ranking report.
- Full-service digital and advertising agencies. Strong on production speed and copy output. The bottleneck is usually measurement: plenty of content appears, its effect is never checked.
- Specialist sole practitioners and management consultancies. Strong on depth and accountability, because one person answers and carries the liability. The bottleneck is capacity, not competence.
- Vendors of AI monitoring tools. They deliver numbers, not advice. A dashboard does not answer why you are not being named.
Why there is no ranked list of company names here, said plainly: I am a provider in this market myself. A ranking written by me would not be a market overview, it would be a sales document, and a list that is right in September is wrong by February. What lasts longer are criteria you can use to build your own shortlist.
What belongs in a GEO audit?
A GEO audit only counts as one if you can follow the result without the consultant. Five components have to be in it:
- The question set, verbatim. Which questions were asked, in which language, for which region? Without that list nothing is repeatable.
- The answers as evidence, not a summary of them, together with the sources they cite. Those sources are your real competitors for the answer, not the firms you assumed were.
- The technical findings. Is the content readable in the HTML, are the AI crawlers allowed in, does the structured data hold up? You can get a first approximation yourself in ten seconds with the GEO scan.
- The findings outside your website: directories, chamber and industry profiles, map services, trade media.
- A prioritised list of measures with effort and expected effect. A list of defects is not a result, it is homework.
For your own baseline before the first conversation, the AI visibility check asks five test questions and returns a score. It does not replace an audit, but it makes the first conversation more concrete.
How do you recognise sound AI monitoring?
By four rules, all of which have to be fixed before the first measurement. I broke every one of them once in my own series of measurements before the numbers held up:
- The question set is fixed in advance and stays the same. Swapping questions afterwards measures your own optimism.
- Measurement happens logged out. Logged in, an assistant draws on the memory of the account and answers more warmly than it would answer a stranger. With ChatGPT, the temporary chat is the remedy.
- Every figure has a denominator. “Named three times” is not a metric. “Three of twelve answers checked” is.
- The method is published alongside the number, especially when it changes.
Why half the work sits outside your website
Because for regional questions, AI assistants do not only read websites, they also insert ready-made blocks of data. In my September 2026 measurement, ChatGPT displayed a map box with entries from the Google business directory, the so-called local pack, for two of six regional questions about consultants, and lifted category and star rating from it into the answer verbatim. If you are not in that box under the right category, you can have the best website there is and still be missing.
The same goes for profiles held by third parties. In my measurement, ChatGPT did not support a mention with the provider's own website but with their Firmen A-Z entry at the Austrian Economic Chamber and further profile pages. On another question the model explicitly justified its selection by noting that a provider's chamber entry showed a particular certificate. So ask explicitly, in the first conversation, about the part outside your own domain.
How do you recognise a good GEO consultant in Austria?
By five things you can all check yourself, three of them within minutes:
- The trade authorisation. Management consultancy including business organisation is a regulated trade in Austria (§ 94 no. 74 GewO 1994, source: ris.bka.gv.at, as at September 2026), whereas advertising and market communication is a free trade. Either can fit GEO work; what matters is that you know what you are buying. You can look it up free of charge in the public GISA search of the Austrian trade register.
- The provider's own visibility. Ask an AI the question a customer would ask, for your region. If the provider is missing that is not a knock-out, but it is a good question for the first meeting.
- A disclosed measurement protocol following the four rules above. Anyone who cannot or will not show one does not have one.
- Responsibility beyond the domain, meaning industry profiles, the chamber entry and map services as part of the engagement rather than as your homework.
- A proposal with a fixed price per building block instead of a lump sum for “GEO”.
The same holds as with funded digital consulting: verifiable credentials beat self-description. How that is formally regulated in the funded context is described in the article Finding a KMU.DIGITAL consultant.
What does GEO consulting cost in Austria?
Reliable figures only emerge after the audit. What you can ask for in advance is the structure of the price: first an audit at a fixed price with a defined deliverable, which commits you to nothing further, then fixed prices per building block so you can keep parts in house, and ongoing support only from the point where measurement and adjustment begin.
What drives the price is rarely the technology. It is how much of your own expertise goes into the texts. Content drawn from your practice is dearer to prepare and cheaper in effect, because it cannot be swapped for anyone else's. Whether a consulting project can be funded through KMU.DIGITAL depends on the module and on the state of the funding pot; I keep both up to date, with source and date, on the overview of digitalisation funding, because figures like that change too often for an article.
What are the warning signs?
Four, and each one on its own justifies a question before you sign:
- Guaranteed mentions or a guaranteed place in the AI answer. Not deliverable, see above.
- llms.txt as the core deliverable. It is quick to write and does no harm, but it is not the lever.
- Success reports without a denominator. “Visibility tripled”, with no statement of how many answers were checked, is not a result, it is a turn of phrase.
- A proposal priced by volume of text. “Twelve articles a month” is a production commitment. What gets cited is not whoever writes most, but whoever answers a question conclusively.
Conclusion
GEO consulting in Austria is a young, unregulated market with very different kinds of provider, and that is exactly why the selection is a solvable piece of craft. Ask for the question set, the denominator and responsibility beyond your own website, and the shortlist sorts itself out. How I set this up is on the GEO page, how it fits into predictable sales work under Performance Sales. Who stands behind it is in the profile, examples from communication work are under References brand & design and in the project archive, filtered to brand, design & communication, 8 of the 89 documented projects.
